Frequently Asked Questions

Q: The extension doesn't work. It says something about java... What should I do?

A: You need the Java plugin (from Sun or Oracle) installed in your browser. Click here to test if you have java installed currently. If you use Windows, download and install the java plugin from here. If you use Ubuntu, then follow these instuctions to install the java plugin (note that you should not use the icedtea plugin since this doesn't work with extensions).

Q: Where are the images that contain my messages stored?

A: On the webserver you configured in the options (in the Firefox menu, select Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions, and look for the For Human Eyes Only extension). There you can also look at the terms of service of the image hosting server.

Q: What is the level of security against computers automatically recovering the text from the images?

A: This depends on the degree to which the text has been distorted. Text that has not been distorted sufficiently well can be automatically recognised by computer software. Automatic software-based recognition of distorted text is an evolving research area. We recommend that you use the For Human Eyes Only extension only for messages that you would otherwise post in plain text.

Q: Why not encrypt the messages instead of distorting the text?

A: If you encrypt your messages, then the recipient will need a key to decrypt them. While most people do not like managing keys, if you really need encrypted messaging, then you could try the Scramble! extension.

Q: How many people are using this extension?

A: We do not know exactly, because not everyone who downloads the extension actually uses it. However, this image hosting server currently hosts 170 images.
